Sarah's first marriage:
On January 3, 1878 in Hardin County, Tennessee, Sarah married D. Alfred Johnson, son of Joel Johnson, grandson of Presley Johnson. They had son Calvin and two daughters, Leathie and Libby. Sarah's husband D. Alfred Johnson and all three children died before 1887.

John Groves Smith's first marriage:
On July 20, 1879 in Hardin Co Tenn, John married Araminta "Minty" Johnson who was the sister of Sarah's first husband D. Alfred Johnson. Minty and John Smith had three children:

1) William Julius Smith aka Julius/Julian Johnson Smith, born July 17, 1880 Hardin Co Tenn. The story has come down in the family that after Julius' daddy John Groves married Sarah, he could not get along with his step-mother and he left home walking, never to be heard from again. Although the family thought he might have gone to Arkansas or Missouri, no record has ever been located for Julius. But he has not been forgotten.
