F.G.Staahl, Retired CGW Worker, Dies
F.Gustav Staahl, 66, of 173 West William Street, one of Corning's oldest Scandinavian glass workers, died at the Corning Hospital Friday evening at 11:45. He had been in poor health for a few years but was admitted to the hospital only Sunday.
The body was removed to Phillips Funeral Home where visiting hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 Sunday. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home Monday afternoon at 1:30 for members of the family, followed by services at the Bethany Methodist Church at 2 o'clock. The Rev. Birger Halvorsen, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Coopers Plains Cemetery.
Born in Jevnaker, Norway, June 25, 1882, he was the son of Peter Elof Staahl and Julia Marie Johansen. He came to this country May 10, 1903, at the age of 21, and settled in Corning two years later. He had been a glass worker in Norway before coming here and was one of the first Scandinavian glass workers to start work for Corning Glass Works. He earned his 45 year pin with that company and retired six years ago.
He was well know in the community for his musicianship, having founded and directed on of the largest Scandinavian choirs in the city at one time. He was conductor of the Bethany Methodist Church choir for many years and in addition, played a musical instrument.
He was a devout member of the Bethany Church and served as chairman of the church board of directors for a number of years. He resigned from that position only last year, because of his health.
His wife, the former Jennie Marie Svensson, whom he married April 17, 1909. died in 1931.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Vivian Anderson of Buffalo and Miss Gladys Staahl, at home; a son, G. Edmund Staahl of Arlington Heights, Ill.; five grandchildren, Miss Karen Anderson of Buffalo; Edmond, Theodore, Susan and Jane Staahl of Arlington Heights; a sister Mrs. Dorthy Kelly of Corning and a brother, Earnest, of West William Street.
