Former Sheriff of Mason County Passed On

One of the largest funerals of Mason County was that of P.C. Baird, 66, held here Sunday afternoon. He had served as sheriff of Mason County for 16 years, being first elected in 1886 when he was but 24 years old, serving 1912 to 1916. He had announced his candidacy for sheriff of Mason County at the coming primary election. When he was 18 years of age he joined the Texas Rangers serving 4 years in Company D under Captain Dan Roberts; and then acted as deputy under J.C. Butler, sheriff of Mason County from 1884 to 1886.

Surviving are his wife, six children: John B. Baird, Victorville, Calif.; Mrs. C.B. Mason and Misses Edna and Nadine Baird of Fort Worth, Texas; Roy R. Baird of San Antonio, Texas and M.A. Baird of Brownsville, Texas, and one brother, Milton Baird of Gotebo, Oklahoma; and three sisters, Mrs. Fannie McKenzie of Farmington, Missouri, Mrs. H.R. Zimmerman of Fort Worth, Texas and Mrs. Henry Ledbetter, Chillicothe, Texas.

P.C. Baird was one of the old timers of this section and he was widely known as an efficient peace officer and a competent detective. He had been a resident of Mason County a greater part of his life, having been away from here for several years before moving back last year. His record as an officer of the law will remain with us as a lasting treasure.

Pall bearers were Sam B. Capps, Sr., W.R. Capps, Henry Doell, E.J. Lemburg, Walter M. Martin and A. E. Grosse.
