Julius was educated at Hartwick Seminary and at an early age engaged in mercantile business in Worcester, which he continued for a number of years. He then moved to New York City and entered extensively in the real estate business. His office was at 355 Greenwich St. New York. He was a prominent member of the New York Stock Exchange and one of the board of directors of the New York National Exchange Bank. Julius and his wife Eliza lived in the Morris-Jumel Mansion in Washington Heights, New York. They sold the property to the New York Historical Society and purchased a large tract of land in Yonkers adjoining Van Cortlandt Park. They developed the section now bearing the Caryl name building a home at 8 Caryl Ave. and built and gave to the Putnam Railroad the Caryl station. [Source: Find A Grave Member #48492112]
