The Rev. Alvin Caldwell Powers, 70, a resident of Salisbury for 10 years and formerly of Keller, Va., died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, in Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.

He was born and reared in South Norfolk, a son of the late Orlando Cleveland Powers and the late Virginia Humphries Powers. He was a minister and member of Immanuel Baptist Church, Salisbury. The Rev. Powers was a graduate of Union University and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He served several churches in Virginia including Hollies Baptist Church in Keller and Modest Town Baptist Church. Beginning in 1960 he died extensive work in the U.S. Army Chaplain Program. He was a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve.

Survivors include his wife, Winnie Rhodes Powers; a daughter, Rebecca Henderson and her husband Dale of Pocomoke, Md.; his mother-in-law, Beatrice M. Rhodes of Saxis, Va.; and three grandchildren, Christopher, Jordan and Nathan Henderson of Pocomoke, Md.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Williams-Parksley Funeral Home, Parksley, by the Rev. Raymond Britton, the Rev. Woodrow Crouse and the Rev. Freddie Ward. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Nancy Custis, P.O. Box 234, Onancock, VA 23417.
