During his lifetime, he was a farmer, a barber and Mayor of Redondo Beach. He was a widower early in life when his beloved wife Jessie Mae Jones died of TB and he was left to raise 4 daughters and a son. He did so with the help of the local Masonic Home (as he was a Mason). He remarried in 1932 to Eleanor Briton until his death in 1971.
