Quartermaster Second Class Alexander was killed in action while onboard the American submarine USS Argonaut (SS-166). On January 10, 1943, the Argonaut spotted a convoy of five freighters and their destroyer escorts near Rabaul. She torpedoed at least one of the destroyers and the rest promptly counter-attacked with depth charges. The Argonaut's bow broke the surface at an unusual angle after she was struck by a depth charge. The circling Japanese destroyers pumped shells into her until she slipped below the waves, taking 105 officers and men with her.

Robert was the husband of Mrs. Mary Alexander, and she lived at 10 Spruce Street, Vallejo, California during the war.
