The son of William & Eleanor L. (Morrison) Anderson, in 1860 he was a farmer living with his family in Hopewell Township, York County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 9" tall with dark hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he first enlisted in Marticville, Lancaster County, June 29, 1863, during the Gettysburg crisis, mustered into state service at Lancaster June 30 as a private with Co. K, 50th Pennsylvania Militia, and honorably discharged with his company August 15, 1863. He then enlisted July 15, 1864, and mustered into federal service ca. July 23 as a private with Co. D, 194th Pennsylvania Infantry. Twelve days later, he was discharged "by reason of enlistment for 1 year" but did not re-enlist until September 4, 1864, in Baltimore, Maryland, there mustering into federal service September 6 as a private with Co. L, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pa). He honorably discharged by general order May 29, 1865.

He married Jane Ann Hyson February 24, 1876, and fathered:

• William Cornelious (01/16/77-1946)
• John Edgar (04/14/78-1961)
• Margaret Elizabeth ( 10/??/79-1973, m. Wiliam Everett Wiley)
• Clinton John (or James) Harvey (05/01/81-1930)
• Robert Miller Hyson (02/12/87-1961)

Other possible children but unconfirmed: Elsie May (married an Althouse), and Rose Pearl (married a Clemens)

In 1890, he lived in East Hopewell Township, York County, but died in Hopewell Township from "chronic nephritis" with complications from "apoplexy."
