Hawley Pettibone first married Philena Hibbard by whom he had Joseph Hawley Pettibone who moved to Flint, MI.

Philena died Aug 23, 1884 and her place of burial is Buckland Cem, Manchester, Hartford Co CT.

Hawley married second to Esther Eliza Loomis. They married Apr 1887 in the same wedding dress several descendants wore including Sandy Sargent Holcombe, one of the contributors of this Memorial. Hawley and Esther had two children, Dorothy Loomis and Loomis. Much information came from the Pettibone Family Bible.

In 1880 Hawley Pettibone, 22 b NY, is found in the home of Elizabeth E Hibbard 51 who was running a boarding house; in the house was Elizabeth's daughter Philena 23 who was a school teacher (PETTIBONE HAWLEY 22 W NY CT HARTFORD MANCHESTER 1880; Series: T9 Roll: 99 Page: 188).

The 1900 census finds the Pettibone family living in New Rochelle and listed as Hawley b May 1856 NY, Esther E b Mar 1861 CT with 2 of 3 children living and married 13 years, Joseph H b Aug 1884 CT, Dorothy L b Apr 1888 CT, and Loomis Oct 1889 CT; Hawley's occp "Engineer Constructing" and they had one female servant (1900; Census Place: New Rochelle Ward 3, Westchester, New York; Roll: T623_ 1176; Page: 4B; Enumeration District: 96).

In 1910 they were still in New Rochelle and listed as Hawley 54 a machine engineer, Esther E 49 with 2 of 2 children living, Joseph H 25, Loomis 21, and Dorothy 22; they had one male servant ( 1910; Census Place: New Rochelle Ward 3, Westchester, New York; Roll: T624_1091; Page: 10A; Enumeration District: 0088; Image: 928; FHL Number: 1375104).

Hawley 63 and Esther E 58 were found living with Charles and Harriet Youngs in 1920 (PETTIBONE HAWLEY 63 M W NY NY ONEIDA VERNON 1920; Series: T625 Roll: 1245 Page: 166).

In 1930 they are listed as living next door to Charles and Harriet Youngs, and noted as Hawley 73 owner of the home valued at $2,500 and Esther E 69 married 45 years (1930; Census Place: Vernon, Oneida, New York; Roll: 1623; Page: 6A; Enumeration District: 159; Image: 556.0).

Hawley and Esther Eliza lived on the farm, which has lengthy family history.

Dec 11, 1815 - Jared C. Pettibone bought of Stephen Brigham(?) Calvary Met mort (?) -
59 acres on Sconondoah (presumably Burke place?)

June 10, 1816 - Daniel Pettibone bought 30 acre farm from heirs of Matthew Smith in
Town of Vernon; (Daniel [father of Jared C. Pettibone, Sr] moved from Norfolk, CT and
moved to Vernon, NY)

Jan 30, 1816 - Daniel Pettibone bought 28 acres next to Matthew Smith's land

Jan 16, 1816 - Daniel Pettibone bought 37 acres -evidently at top of big hill

14 acres lot "Salt Lick Lot"

1822- At one time farm was divided (at death of Abjah Pettibone) by
survey, into 9 parcels to widow and heirs. Division never
actually carried out; all signing off to Asahel.

May 21, 1841-Asahel Bronson bought out heirs of Abijah P. Bronson

Dec 28, 1841-Asabel Bronson and Achsah his wife deeded farm to
Jared C. Pettibone Sr. for $2,740 (Recorded March 1841;
book # 106 pp. 197-8)

- When Jared C. Pettibone bought farm from Bronsons, John R. Jones was
on the farm, on a lease of 1 year

Nov 4, 1885 -Jared Jr. died; wife Mary A. Pettibone lived there till death
June 29, 1914;Their children were Milo, Hawley, Flora, and Harriet.

March 26, 1891 - marriage date of Harriet and Charles F. Youngs (who
moved next door, now Veterinary.) CFY wrote the poem "The Sconondoa
Creek". (Both buried in Vernon Center cemetery, along with Pettibones).

April 27, 1887 - Hawley Pettibone married Esther Eliza Loomis (2nd wife);
she lived at farm (summers, mostly, though at least the winters 1934 and
1935) with her daughter in law Rena Clark (Mrs. Loomis) Pettibone till
1951 death

1960's-Farm sold from family.

Vernon Center Noted Engineer Dies At Age Of 77
Hawley Pettibone, Well Known Man, Stricken at Family Homestead
Vernon Center, Nov. 20 --At an early hour Sunday morning at the family homesteat near here, where he was born more than 77 years ago, occurred the death of Hawley Pettibone, highly esteemed resident, after a short illness.
Mr. Pettibone eldest son of the late Jared C. and Mary Ann Hawley Pettibone, was born May 24 1856, and was graduated from Whitestown Seminary. By profession he was an outstanding engineer, his business centering in New York City for more than 36 years . . .
He was of Revolutionary ancestry being a great-great grandson of Daniel Pettibone who served in that war and a nephew of Hon. Joseph R. Hawley of Hartford, Conn., a general of the Civil War . . .
On April 27, 1886 he was married to Miss Esther E. Loomis of Hartford, Conn., who survives with one daughter Mrs. R. K. Haughton of Birmingham, Ala., and two sons, Joseph Hawley Pettibone of Flint, Mich., and Loomis Pettibone a home; also one sister, Mrs. Charles F. Youngs of this place and two granddaughters, Miss Ann Haughton of Birmingham and Miss Patricia Pettibone of this place. A sister Mrs. L. R. Pexton died Sept. 22, 1931.
Funeral services will be held at his late home on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with burial in charge of C W Kitson in the Bronson Cemetery.
