The register listed him as 24 years old and born at Phillips, Maine. Physical information given was light hair, fair complexion, blue eyes and 5 foot 11 inches in height. Birth year was approximately 1837.
"U. S. Civil War Soldiers, 1861-1865" states that Fernando enlisted as a private into the Regular Army 17th Infantry Regiment.
Fernando's brothers Francis and Charles were both in the Civil War. Francis M. was the surgeon of the 7th Maine Infantry, Co. I. Charles was in Company A, 8th Maine Infantry.
