Hon. William H. Ely, one of the pioneer business men of Otsego county, died in New York, Sunday morning, aged seventy-eight years. Mr. Ely was well known throughout the county. He was prominent in politics at one time, having served two terms as Member of Assembly from Otsego county. His wife, two sons, Hon. William Caryl Ely, and Dr. A. B. Ely, also two daughters survive him. The remains were brought to Schenevus and placed in the vault, Monday morning, and upon the return of relatives from Europe, will receive burial. "A monument was erected last week in the Worcester cemetery to the memory of the late William Ely. The memorial is of hammered granite and is one of the finest and most massive specimens of granite work in eastern Otsego. It is erected by Hon. W. Carlyle Ely of Buffalo, who is a son of William Ely and a grandson of Dr. Sumner Ely of Middlefield, who was one of the pioneer physicians of the county."
