John first joined the Confederate Army as he thought otherwise he would be killed. He was with Co C of Gordon's Regiment of AR Cavalry. The first chance he had, he left and went to the US Army.
He was 5'7" tall with dark complexion, hazel eyes and dark hair. He was a farmer by occupation.
He served in Co D of the 5th AR Cavalry in the Union Army. In the fall of 1864 near Little Rock AR he contracted kidney and liver diseases while he was shoeing horses. He was taken to the hospital.
In 1868 he was suffering from disease of the eyes and was growing weaker ever since. Disease of the stomach and piles and enlarged prostrate also caused him to suffer.
The family lived in Ellsworth AR in 1870 before moving on to Deleware AR. They were in Deleware AR in 1880 and 1900.
His wife was born in 1840 in NC and died in 1909. She is buried with him in the Elizabeth Hall Cemetery in Logan County AR as are most of their children.
In 1888 he was suffering from pains in his side and back and his complexion was sallow. He was loosing fully two thirds of his time from work. (John filed for a pension on the 5th of April 1888.)
By 1902 John was suffering from general debility from old age.
