MRS. REBECCA E. LOWERY CADWELL BURCH

Without Mrs.Burch there would not be a town called Cadwell today. Nor would there have been for the last 103 years. Mrs.Rebecca E.L.C. Burch was the daughter of
Mr. Jeremiah M. and Mary Lowery was born and reared in the eastern section of Laurens County,G.A.
Her first Husband Matthew Cadwell, was killed by lightning while riding his horse at the age of 30 in 1888.They were the parents of three children, Victoria,Clevland, and W.B.
Her Second husband was Charlton O. Burch. They also had three children ,Charlton A.,Matthew ,and Belar.
When Charlton Died in 1902 his widow became heir to many acres of farm and timber land in the southern part of Laurens County,G.A. Within three years of his death she had conceived the idea of a town being located on her lands and had intended to name the town Burch. However there was already a post Office in G.A. by that name so she could not use the name Burch. So she named the town for her first husband Matthew.
In January 1905 Mrs. Burch hired Z.Whitehurst of dublin, who later became Superintendent of Laurens County Schools, to survey and draw the original plat of the proposed town. according to tradition,William Gaulden Burch, assisted on laying out of streets and sidewalks. This plat shows five streets with four of them named.Later in the same year Mrs. Burch had the plat revised with Burch Street and an alley being located between Snow hill and Coleman Streets. She had both these plats recorded in the office of the clerk of the Superior Court in the Laurens County Courthouse.
Mrs.Burch only lived to be Sixty years of age. Tragedy struck in her life more than once. two years before her death in 1925 her next-to-youngest son was shot and killed in tragic, and Mysterious circumstances in the drug store of the little town she had nourished to life.No one can doubt that Mrs. Burch lived a full, fruitful life whose bennifits many who live in Cadwell today continue to reap.
But without her and her vision all of this would have never happened.
