Ezekiel was residing in Yancey County and enlisted in Company G, 29th North Carolina Infantry at the age of 27. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant on July 26, 1861 and was promoted to Captain on May 2, 1862. He was appointed Major on August 15, 1864 to rank from March 16, 1863 and was transferred to the Field and Staff of the regiment. He was "an officer of sober, steady habits, prompt in discharge of his duties and [of] excellent moral character."
