DOROTHY SCHWANTES, 84, of Winfield, Kansas passed away Wednesday afternoon, July 28, 2010 at her home.
Born on February 9, 1926 in Haverhill Township, Butler County, she was the daughter of Melvin Cyrus and Loulia (Sheffield) Seglem. She was raised in El Dorado, Wichita, and Corpus Christi, Texas and later Winfield where she graduated from Winfield High School in 1944.
She was united in marriage on July 1, 1944 to Don L. Schwantes in Winfield where there couple made their home. Dorothy worked for Larry Schuster at Schuster's Yard and Garden. Mr. Schwantes preceded her in death on May 18, 1997.
She enjoyed gardening and hosted garden tours to raise money for the Winfield Memorial Forest Program.
Her family includes: Her daughter: Sherry Helms of Tulsa, OK; Her granddaughter: Sabrina Helms of Tulsa, OK; Her grandson: Rob Helms of Santa Rosa, CA; Her brother: Melvin Seglem and wife June Seglem of Wichita, KS; Her sister: Maybelle Chastain of St. Louis, MO; Her sister-in-laws: Lois Seglem and Betty Seglem; and Her extended friends: Norma Lee Mayo (Frati), Linda Keasling and Mike Sallee. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sons, Robbie and Tim Schwantes, her brothers, Norman Seglem and Marvin Seglem and her sister, Betty Louise Seglem.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at Highland Cemetery.
A memorial has been established in Dorothy's name for the Winfield Memorial Forest at Winfield City Lake. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
