REV. S.C. CALDWELL IS DEAD IN SOUTH CAROLINA

Distinguished Citizen, Educator and Minister Dies at Advanced Age of 75 Years.

Rev. Samuel Craighead Caldwell, father of Isaac Pearson Caldwell of Charlotte, died Tuesday night at Clinton S.C. at the age of 75. He will be buried at McPhersonvllle, S.C. tomorrow. Isaac Pearson Caldwell will attend the funeral.

Dr. Caldwell was born in Rome Ga., and was the son of Rev. John M. M. Caldwell. He was educated at Princeton, graduating in the class of 1869. He was afterward associated with his father in the conduct of the Rome Female college, until 1890, when he entered the Presbyterian ministry, filling pastorates in Tallahassee, Fla., Hendersonville and Edisto Island, S.C.

He was married three times. His first wife was Miss Kate Pearson. of Rome Ga., To them were born four children — S.C. Caldwell Jr., of Kansas City. Mo., Isaac Pearson Caldwell, of Charlotte, Miss Caroline E Caldwell and James W. Caldwell of Clinton. Mrs. Caldwell died in 1898.

Dr. Caldwell married in 1904 Miss Sophy Glover of McPhersonville, S.C. who died in 1905 leaving a daughter, Emily Glover Caldwell.

In 1915 he married Miss Annie Logan of Greenville S.C. who died in 1917.

He retired from the ministry January 1, 1918 on account of infirmities and has been living at Clinton, S.C.

He is survived by his five children, and by two brothers, Rev. Dr. John L. Caldwell of Charlotte, and Rev. A. Shorter Caldwell of Tryon, N.C.

He was connected with many of the old families of Mecklenburg Rowan and Guilford behind a descendant of Rev. David Caldwell of Guilford, and Alexander Craighead of Mecklenburg, both of Revolutionary fame. He was the ninth Presbyterian minister in direct descent. He was an able man and an exceptionally strong character. Inheriting the traits of his illustrious Scotch-Irish ancestry, he was a dominant force wherever he was, Godly, upright, true and strong.
