James McCracken enlisted in the 5th Tenn Inf. (Union) on 25 Feb 1862 at the age of 18. While stationed at Carthage, Smith Co. TN he met Sarah E. Waggoner, who he married on 13 Sep 1863. His marriage bond was signed by another member of the 5th Tenn Inf. Co A, A.J. Whaley. Sarah died and James married Catherine Snider on 2 Mar 1879 in Monroe Co. TN..They divorced 18th Sep. 1880
