Illinois National Guardsman called to service when his tank company was federalized as B Company, 192nd Tank Battalion. He was later a member of Hq Company and A Company. He fought on Bataan and became a Prisoner of War on April 9, 1942. He took part in the death march and was held as a POW at Camp O'Donnell and Cabanatuan. He died on October 24, 1944, when the Japanese "hell ship", the Arisan Maru, he was on was sunk by an American submarine. The Japanese refused to pick up the POWs who were in the water. Of the 1803 POWs on the ship, only nine survived the sinking. His name appears on the Tablets of the Missing at the American Military Cemetery at Manila.
