He was the son of Wayne, Pennsylvania Presbyterian minister Rev. William Alexander Patton and his wife, Mary Ella Tripple, daughter of Anthony P. Tripple and Mary Aull Tripple of Philadelphia.
He was a brother to Mary Elizabeth Patton (Bess) (Mrs. Alvin Parker McCarter), George, Richard H., and Robert Patton. He was a 1919 Penn State University graduate.
He married first Helen Darlington, and they had four children:
1. Helen D. (Betsy) Patton McCarter Mirabella (Mrs. John R.), adopted by the Alvin Parker McCarters of Strafford, PA at age five, after the divorce of her mother, Helen Darlington from her father, John Spencer Patton.
2. Mary Katherine Patton (remained with her mother).
3. Barbara Patton (died in infancy).
4. John("Jack") Patton, Jr
After a divorce from Helen, he married next, Ina Ursula Neher Bowen Patton, daughter of George H. Neher and Emma Laura Austin of Erie County, New York.
Ina (Mrs. John Patton) died on April 10, 1971 in State College, Pennsylvania, where she is buried.
