Commander Bergen (Berk) Frederic Berkaw, USNR, Ret., CEC, 95, died Saturday afternoon, July 31, 2010, at his home, in Summerville.

He was born May 9, 1915, in Stockertown, Pa. and was the son of the late Ernest de Mun and Lula Bilheimer Berkaw.

Mr. Berkaw was a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, class of 1938 obtaining a BS degree in Civil Engineering. He met his wife, Susanne Ellett, while studying at VPI. They were married on September 6, 1941.

He was an active Episcopalian having been a member of The Church of The Holy Communion, Holy Trinity, and St. Paul's Summerville. He served as Treasurer, Junior and Senior Warden, Diocesan Convention Delegate and member of the Diocesan Camp and Conference Committee. He and his wife hosted over one hundred Elder Hostels at Camp St. Christopher. During WWII,

Mr. Berkaw served in the South Pacific (Guam & Palmyra). In 1939 he worked in Lexington, VA as the Public Health Officer. Next, he became City Engineer and Assistant City Manager in Fredericksburg, VA. Following WWII, he became City Manager in Clifton Forge, VA.

During the Korean Conflict, Mr. Berkaw was called up for active duty and stationed in Charleston, SC. After the conflict, he was employed in the Public Works Department of the Charleston Naval Shipyard. He held this job until his retirement in 1972. As a member of the Naval Reserve, he was the Commander of the CEC Southaest Region Reserve RMCB24.

His wife, Susanne Ellett Berkaw and a son, Robert Ellett Berkaw, predeceased him.

A son, Bergen Frederic Berkaw, Jr. and his wife Mary Groseclose Berkaw, a daughter, Mary Neale Berkaw, and a brother, Ernest de Mun Berkaw, Jr., and several nieces and nephews survive him.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Paul's Church, 316 W. Carolina Ave., Summerville, 29483, The Church of the Holy Communion, 218 Ashley Avenue, Charleston, 29403, and Hospice of Charleston, 3870 Leeds Ave., N Charleston, 29405. Family and friends may call at the St. Paul's Church building on Wednesday, August 4, 2010, from 7-8 p.m. Funeral service will be at St. Paul's Church, 316 West Carolina Ave, Summerville at 2 p.m. on Thursday, August 5 with burial in the churchyard. The Berkaw family is being served by PALMETTO CREMATION SOCIETY, Charleston, SC.
