Susannah Louisa Ettleman had dark hair and blue eyes, was about five feet six inches tall and slender. It was said that she smoked a pipe in later years.

Joseph Chamberlain and Susannah were married on 26 of April 1849 in Carthage, Illinois. By 1953, they were living near Memphis, Missouri, in a town three and a half miles away called Slabtown. On the farm, they raised watermelons and had a brickyard. With a growing family, they kept a cow and chickens. Susan made butter and sold it along with eggs

A letter written by her father states that Susan was back living with him in 1865 and that her eyes were giving her trouble. She moved back and forth for a while and finally divorced Joseph on 11 October 1867. She said he was mean. She was expecting her 9th child. She went to Veile, Iowa and worked as a mid-wife delivering all the babies around the area. Susannah dearly loved her grandchildren. Nearly all of her children belonged to a church.

Susan married Robert Lee Carson and had two more children.

Susannah went blind in her later years and was admitted to the Lee County Home in Iowa 17 July 1910. She died there in 1917 at the age of 79. She was buried 2 May 1917 in Keokuk, Iowa. The county home and cemetery are in Summitville, about 5 miles out of Keokuk. There is also a little church there. Susannah's grave is on the North side, on a hill slope. There are no markings on county graves.
