WILKESVILLE PAIR DIE VIOLENTLY
A murder and a suicide resulted in the deaths of James Mahaffey, 47, and his former wife, Anna Mae Mahaffey, 37, took place Saturday evening in the Wilkesville area. The shooting took place on Mrs. Mahaffey's 37th birthday and
she was found dead in her home on Rt. 124 with a .22 caliber bullet lodged behind her left ear. Sheriff Harold Steele of Vinton County said she was shot about 6:30 P.M. Saturday and the body was discovered after the shooting.
James Mahaffy then drove to the home of his mother, Mrs. Gaynell Mahaffey on Ewington Rt. 2, went to an upstairs bedroom and shot himself in the chest with a
12-gauge shot gun. An ambulance was called and he died as he was entering the emergency room at Holtzer Hospital.
Mr. Mahaffey was a veteran of World War II, was a barber and was divorced from Mrs. Mahaffey several months ago. The Mahaffey's are survived by three sons, Billy 14, Timmie, 12 and Frank, 10 years old. Anna Mae Mahaffey was born May 20, 1930 at Bland, VA. She was taken to Bland, where funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon. James Mahaffey was born in Wilkesville, December 9, 1919, the son of William and Gaynelle Arbaugh Mahaffey. He was formerly a barber in Wilkesville. His father proceeded him in death in 1966. Funeral services were held at EUB Church at Radcliff on Tuesday afternoon with Rev. A. B. Maloy officiating.
