Paul's home town was Ponca City, Kay County, Oklahoma. His parents were Paul Wideman and Alice Marie MacDonald Arthaud and siblings were Alice Ann "Alec", and Joseph F. Arthaud. Paul joined the US Army Air Corps in June 1942 after attending Deep Springs College in California. He graduated from the US Army Flying School at Columbus, Mississippi. Paul was a member of the 391st Bomber Squadron of the 34th Bomb Group and was awarded the Air Medal and Purple Heart posthumously.
