OBITUARY

On Friday last a message came from Bateham, Kansas, that Mr. Thompson Sr. had passed away, and on Saturday morning at ten o'clock a large number of friends gathered at the Congregational church with his relatives to pay their last respects to this aged and honored father. The funeral services were conducted by his pastor assisted by Rev. Mr. Lenfest of the M.E. church.

John Sampson Thompson was born May 17, 1810 in Mercer Co. Pa., and died Nov. 3, 1898 at his home near Bateham, Kan. In 1867, he removed from Pa. to Jackson Co. Iowa and in the autumn of the same year to Jasper Co. In 1878, he came to Fairmont where he has since lived until his recent removal to Kan. He was united in marriage to Nancy Osborn on Dec, 22, 1831. From this union nine children were born, two girls and seven boys, three of which are still living Hiram D., Cyrus B. and John S.

Mr. Thompson was converted in his youth and at the time of his death was a member of the Congregational church at this place. We remember with especial pleasure and with gratitude to God his clear mind up to the end so unusual at such an age and his ever willing testimony to his faith.
