He married Saffrona about 1916. When he registered for the WWI draft on June 5, 1917, he said he was married with one child. (The child probably was his step-son, Edward Jacobs).
On October 6, 1917 they inducted him into the U.S. Army even though he was over 30 years old. They assigned him to the 308th Trench Motor Battery. (He had to be the oldest Private in the Army). Two months later they recognized their mistake and he was honorably discharged December 7, 1917.
