He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on April 2, 1942 at Mitchel Field, Hempstead, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Stock clerk and also as Single, without dependents.

Sheldon was "Killed In Action" when his B-24 was hit by enemy flak and crashed near Bucharest, Romania during the war. He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
