He was the son of James Henry Steele and Sara Ruth Steele of Lebanon Kentucky. He was named after US President William McKinley. He is buried at the Suresnes military cemetary in Paris France. His tombstone is incorrect showing his middle initial as N that should be M. He died in France from scarlet fever.

Upon Pvt. Steele's death, Pvt. Steele was initially interred at Grave #16, American Cemetery, La Courtine, France on the afternoon of Wednesday, July 17th, 1918, and was finally reinterred at Grave #26, Row #15, Section A. at Suresnes American Cemetery, Suresnes, Hauts-de-Seine (Paris), France on the afternoon of Saturday, October 22nd, 1921.
