Capt Hanner served both in the Spanish-American War and in World War I. When in France, he served in Company E, 142nd Infantry Regiment, 36th Division. He received the French Croix de Guerre for his gallantry on the battle field, dying just a little over a month before the Armistice was signed, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.
