SERVICE RECORD
Arthur was assigned to the 72nd Battalion of the Canadian Infantry when he enlisted for war service. He was described as 5'6" tall with grey eyes, brown hair and a fair complexion. His date of birth is shown as 30th Oct 1896 which is incorrect by one year, he also appears to have acquired a middle initial ‘A’. He embarked at Halifax in Canada, on 23rd April 1916 and landed in Liverpool, on 5th May. He proceeded to France with his Battalion in August that year to join the British Expeditionary Force. The 72nd battalion were part of the 12th Infantry Brigade in the 4th (Canadian) Division. They received many battle honours including ‘The Battle of the Somme’ in 1916, ‘The Battle of Vimy Ridge’ and ‘The Battle of Passchendaele’ in 1917 and ‘The Battle of Amiens’ in August 1918. On 29th September 1918, Arthur was wounded by gunshot and shrapnel in his left arm, left hand, left leg and left cheek. He was treated at the 22nd Casualty Clearing station, before being admitted to the 32nd Stationary Hospital, where it was found that his left leg was so badly damaged, that it had to be amputated. He became seriously ill a few days after the operation and died in the hospital on 9th October 1918.

Father Henry was a Carter in 1881 and in 1887, he moved his rapidly expanding family to Canada, where they settled on their own Homestead in Mission City, British Columbia. He died there, aged 68, on 7th February 1922. He is buried in Hatzig Cemetery in Fraser Valley, British Columbia, Canada.
Mother Eliza died in Mission City, British Columbia, aged 59, on 19th October 1915. She is buried in the same grave as Arthur’s father in Hatzig Cemetery.

Sister Nellie married John Dougall Liddle in Canada, on 9th November 1911. They had at least two children together. Nellie died in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, Canada, aged 51, on 18th August 1940.
Brother Walter married Gladys Annie Dwyer in Canada, on 22nd December 1914. They had at least one child together. Walter died in Seattle in the USA, aged 66, on 31st December 1957.
