Robert D. Akin, 90, of Independence, Missouri, peacefully passed away Thursday, August 5, 2010, at his home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 7, 2010, at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service from 1 p.m. - 2 p.m. in the chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to Vitas Hospice, 4041 S. Lynn Ct. Dr. #300, Independence, Mo 64055 or Walnut Park RLDS, 23rd & Pearl, Independence, Mo 64050. Burial in Mound Grove Cemetery.

Robert was born May 21, 1920, in Fulton, KS, to John Dewey and Nell Irene (Lounsbery) Akin. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during WWII on the U.S. Carrier Wasp in the Pacific Theatre. Bob was a member of the Walnut Park RLDS Church over 50 years. Mr. Akin retired after 25 years of faithful service from Benson Manufacturing. He enjoyed gardening, traveling and going to auctions in his spare time. Bob was an honest and good man and a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Robert is survived by his daughter Linda Andes (John); grandson Robert Andes (Karrie); great-grandchildren Jacob, Kyle and Maria; loving wife of 19 years, Doris (Bly) Akin; he loved the children she added to his life too; Robert (Phyllis) Carrasco, Sharon (Chris) Wernlund, Shari (Ed) Severeid, Debi Moore, Sheila (John) Grogan; step-grandchildren Jennifer, Jamie (Sean), Jason (Gina), Penny, Amy, Rachel, Jim, Ryan, Damon (Michelle), Janna (John); and 16 step-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Akin was preceded in death by his first wife Velma Akin in 1989.
