On 21 June 1944 Gladstone, a navigator, took off from RAF Waddington, Lincolnshire on board an Avro Lancaster III, serial number ED532, markings PO-H Australia. Takeoff was at 23:02 hrs for a bombing operation against the synthetic oil plant at Scholven-Buer.

The aircraft was intercepted by Hauptmann Ernst-Wilhelm Modrow & Unteroffizier Erich Schneider of the 1./NJG 1, who had taken off from Venlo airfield (the Netherlands) at 00:43 hrs in Heinkel He 219 A-0 G9+AH.
