44 Squadron's Avro Lancaster III (#ND565) aircraft, with an aircrew of eight, took off at night from RAF Dunholme Lodge for an air operation flight over Berlin, Germany. At the completion of the operation and homeward bound, ND565 drifted off the flight track. The Lancaster was hit and damaged by flak, crashing near Angermunde (10 km N of Dusseldorf) and taking the lives of the entire crew.
