Private Ralph E. “Elwood” Acker, born 19 May 1926, was the son of Ralph Emanuel and Della (Hurley) Acker of Freeburg, Snyder County, PA. Freeburg is just west of the Susquehanna River 40 miles due north of Harrisburg.

In the 1930 census 4 year-old Elwood is living with his parents and 10 year-old brother in Freeburg. His father is a laborer in a Dye Works. By the 1940 census 14 year-old Elwood is living with his parents and 20 year-old brother in Freeburg. His father is a timekeeper for the W.P.A. (Works Progress Administration).

Elwood enlisted on 14 Sep 1944 at Harrisburg, PA.

In late February the 376th IR was detached from the 94th ID to assist the 10th Armored Division in the capture of Trier. On 3 March, the 376th rejoined the 94th Infantry Division for the drive for the Rhine River.

On the day that Pvt. Acker was killed in action, 12 Mar 1945, the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the 376th were lined up north south along the Ruwer River near Romika, 7 miles southeast of Trier. The Ruwer river flows north into the Moselle at the town of Ruwer, northeast of Trier. 3rd Battalion was in regimental reserve at Krettnach-Obermennig 2 miles due west.
