08-01-1943 joined the Army
U.S. Army, 42nd Tank Battalion, 11th Armored Division
D-Company

Unit history:

On December 31st the Germans counterattacked with tanks, infantry, self-propelled guns, and heavy artillery support. The battalion hung on and pushed the enemy back with help from air support, artillery, and every other available weapon. The battalion lost several tanks but knocked out several German combat vehicles.

The battalion was part of the division's Combat Command "A" (CCA), which was ordered to attack toward Hubermont on the afternoon of December 31st. Tanks formed a line of battle, the halftracks were right behind. The Shermans blasted away at the German lines with 76-mm guns and machine guns. Machine gunners in the halftracks opened fire, while infantry banged away with rifles.

The Thunderbolt attack was successful but at a loss of one man killed and 10 wounded. The next morning orders came to withdraw because there wasn't enough infantry support to outpost the newly won positions. Reluctantly the 42nd ATB moved back to Rechrival and Brul.
