He was a counselor at Camp Haven, CT one summer and was employed at the local First National Store before entering the US Army in July of 1943. He received his training at Fort Benning, Georgia and Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He went overseas in August of 1944. He was reported missing in action on November 11, 1944 and was reported back with his regiment on November 24th.
He served in the 101st Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
He had three brothers: Keith, Merle, and Lawrence who served with the Eighth Airforce in England.
He descended from a long line of Bridghams who left Plympton, Plymouth, MA in the early 1700s and settled in Oxford and/or Androscoggin Counties in Maine. Several in the line were noted doctors.
Online resources (ancestry.com) suggest that he was a direct descendent of Mayflower passenger, John Alden.
