5 Jun 1917 Registers for the draft in Prairie County, Montana at age 28, self employed farmer in Cabin Creek listing support of mother and sister under 12 as dependents
16 July 1918 13th Division activated at Camp Lewis, Pierce County, Washington
28 Aug 1918 Inducted at Prairie County, Montana (SN 47 04 564) as Private initial processing through 45th Company 12th Battalion 166th Depot Brigade, then rail movement to Camp Lewis, Washington.
6 Sep 1918 Assigned to Company H, 26th Brigade, 76th Infantry, 13th Division ("Lucky 13th"), Camp Lewis. Spanish influenza epidemic reached Camp Lewis, and the post soon averaged 10 deaths per week.
19 Oct 1918 In an effort to halt the widening epidemic, Major General (MG) Joseph D. imposed a quarantine
11 Nov 1918 Armistice signed ending World War I before the 13th Division could complete its training and depart for France. Within a few days, MG Leitch began permitting the release of officers who were no longer needed, as well as soldiers who requested discharge so they could return home to support their families.
