William was a member of 2/26 Battalion Headquarter Company, and was a member of Sgt. Heale's Party, when he was killed.

After capitulation, he was buried by Padre Polain, but his body was unable to be located by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in 1946.

William shared a grave with Stanley Blannin.
