During the night of 25-26 May, 464 B-29's dispatched from the XXI Bomber Command attack Tokyo urban areas immediately south of the Imperial Palace and just north of that bombed on 23-24 May with 3,262 tons of incendiary bombs which destroyed financial, commercial and governmental districts as well as factories and homes; six B-29's attack other targets.
Twenty-six B-29's are lost (the largest loss of B-29's and crews in a single day).
During the return flight to Tinian, Mammy Yokum reported minor flight control system problems, at latitude 22 degrees 21 minutes east longitude 142 degrees 18
minutes.
The plane's last messages were:
"Trouble with surface control. May have to bail out."
His actual death date was May 26 1945 as noted above, but he was declared legally dead one year and one day later, May 27 1946, which is what any government record will show.
