SN2 Kestler went missing in action on the morning of 11 May 1945 while supporting the invasion of Okinawa when the USS Bunker Hill (CV-17) was struck and severely damaged by two Japanese kamikaze planes. Of the Bunker Hill crew, 346 sailors and airmen were killed, 43 went missing (and were never found), and 264 were wounded. SN2 Kestler posthumously received the Purple Heart Medal.
