Norris gave his life in service to his country May 12, 1945 while serving aboard the USS New Mexico when the ship was attacked by 2 kamikazes. During the battle 54 sailors were killed and 119 wounded. Norris was then buried on Okinawa Island Cemetery with reinterment at National Cemetery Honolulu, May 24, 1949.
