Graduated from Louisiana State University.

Slack was with the 768th Bomber Squadron, 462nd Bomber Group. On January 6 1945 he was piloting B-29 #42-65254, leading a group of six planes on a bombing mission against the Omura Aircraft Factory on the island of Kyushu Japan. They were attacked by enemy fighters and the bomber was heavily damaged, losing two engines. Slack was able to keep the plane in the air for more than 35 minutes, but finally had to ditch in the ocean. Rescue planes and submarines were unable to locate the crew.

Slack received the Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart.

His wife was Ellen Harriet Lancaster, they had a son.
