Captain Lawson was the pilot of B-29A Superfortress #44-83899 "Temper Eleven," serving with the 402nd Bomber Squadron, 502nd Bomb Group, 20th Air Force, World War II.

He was one of nine airmen killed when his airplane crashed, five miles northeast of Isley Field, on Saipan Island. Aircraft was engaged in a "POW Supply Support Mission," after picking up cargo parachutes at Florida Blanca Air Field in the Philippines. The parachutes were to be used to drop supplies of Allied POWs, still in Japanese POW Camps awaiting liberation, following the cessation of hostilities on August 15, 1945. The crash occurred during a second approach to Isley Field on Saipan. The first landing attempt was aborted due to night instrument problems, bad visibility, and stormy conditions.

The crew members killed were:

1st Lt. Bernard P Beine
1st Lt. Lawrence C Honeycutt, Jr
1st Lt. Robert Rex Kindig
1st Lt. Hartphey Haller
