On 19 Jan 1942, unescorted ocean liner S.S. 'Lady Hawkins' was torpedoed and sunk by the German U-boot U-66, between Cape Hatteras and Bermuda. 'Lady Hawkins' was carrying 213 passengers and 109 crew. Three lifeboats were launched after the attack but only one, containing 71 persons, was picked up five days later; the steamship 'Coamo' of the New York and Puerto Rico Line, landed the survivors at San Juan, Puerto Rico, on 28 Jan 1942.
About 251 people perished; 88 of them were crew members.
