Mr. Jurney S. "Jay" Edgerton Jr. served in the United States Army in Vietnam from 1964 to 1965, during which he received the Air Medal for having flown over 200 missions as a helicopter gunner. He was a member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars, and Disabled American Veterans, and the Purple heart Association. He was seriously injured in 1967 when his car collided with a train and suffered many ongoing complications as a result for the entirety of his life. This mishap cut short a gift of history and genealogy pursued since he was a youth. He nevertheless compiled a library of local and regional history, and being of Scottish ancestry, was well schooled in the history of Scotland and the Scottish Highlanders. He was a 1982 graduate of Pembroke State University and a lifelong member and deacon at Philadelphus Presbyterian Church in the Philadelphus community near Red Springs, North Carolina.
