Walter Varley Standing was a Merchant Navy Fireman aboard the Arandora Star when at 07.58 hours on 2 Jul, 1940, the unescorted Arandora Star was hit by one torpedo from U-47 about 125 miles west by north of Malin Head, County Donegal, Ireland. Walter was among those who died during the attack.

His cemetery cenotaph in his family's plot.
