One of six children of John and Elizabeth (Murphy) Fielding. He was a Private in the South Wales Boarders and was killed in the Retreat From Mona in France during World War I.

His father, John , enlisted in the 24th Regiment of Foot (which became the South Wales Borders) under the name of John Williams. He won the Vicotria Cross in the Defense of Roark's Drift in 1879.
