Suggested edit: Private First-Class Ernest Green Baytops, born 20 Mar 1920, was the son of Robert L and Mattie A (Gatewood) Baytops of Stevensville, King and Queen County, Virginia. Stevensville is 39 mi ENE of Richmond.
In the 1930 census 10-year-old Ernest is living with his parents and siblings Annie 16, Arthur 14, James 12, and Thelma 6, on a farm in the Stevensville Magisterial District of King and Queen County. His father is a general farmer.
In the 1940 census 20-year-old Ernest is living with his parents and siblings Annie 26, Arthur 24, James 23, Thelma 16, Edna 10, and Robert Jr 4, in rural Stevensville. His father is a carpenter. Ernest is a farm laborer.
Ernest enlisted or was inducted 13 Aug 1942. He'd had a grammar school education and was single without dependents. His civil occupation was listed under unskilled longshoremen and stevedores. He was sent to North Africa and assigned to the 482nd Port Battalion.
The NARA WWII casualty listings by state and county for Virginia show Baytops, Ernest G, Pfc from King and Queen County as DNB (Died Non-Battle) so he died in the line of duty from some illness or accident on 3 Feb 1944.
