He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on December 7, 1942 in Detroit, Michigan. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Machinist and also as Single, without dependents.
John was a passenger on the S.S. Paul Hamilton (Hull Number 227) when the ship was sunk off Algiers in the Mediterranean Sea by a aerial torpedo dropped by a German Ju 88 bomber. The ship sank within 30 seconds due to the high amount of explosives on board. A total of approximately 580 men where lost.
John was declared "Missing In Action" in this sinking during the war.
He was awarded the Purple Heart.

Sgt John Quade, 20, son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Albert Quade, former Iron Mountain, Michigan residents, lost his life April 20, when the troopship U.S.S. Lansdale was sunk by enemy action in the Mediterranean, according to the United States War Department.
His sister, Mrs. W. Harkness, Detroit, has been told he was missing. A later telegram established that Sgt Quade, a camera repairman, lost his life on the day he was reported missing,
Sgt Quade was well-known in Iron Mountain where he attended school. He assisted his father, manager of the old Felch Hotel & later worked with his brother Stanley, who is now a SSgt. In the United States Army, in his photographic studio.
Sgt Quade left Iron Mountain to work in Detroit in 1942 & lived with his sister. He enlisted in the service Dec. 2, 1942 on the anniversary of Pearl Harbor & was trained stateside before being assigned overseas.
The sister & brother are his only survivors.
Memorials are at North African American Cemetery & Memorial in Carthage, Tunis, Tunisia & Cemetery Park, Iron Mountain, Michigan. His actual body was lost at sea.
