William's enlistment record state that he completed grammar school and worked as a general farm hand. It also stated that he was married but contained no details of his wife or family. He enlisted as a Private April 21, 1944 at Fort McPherson, Atlanta. His service number was 34980135. He was living in Murray County, Georgia, just prior to enlisting. Pvt. Stroud was serving with the 22nd Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, in Belgium when he died, November 27, 1944, about seven months after he enlisted. He was buried in grave A-17-22 at Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery in Belgium.

Shortly after his death, The Chatsworth Times published this article: "W. E. Stroud Killed in Action. Pvt. William Ellis Stroud, son of Mrs. and Mrs. W. S. Stroud, Route 2, Chatsworth, has been reported killed in action in Germany, on November 27. Other survivors are the soldier's wife, Mrs. Hazel Stroud, and two daughters, Wilena and Caroline Fay Stroud, all of Dalton; one brother, Hoke Stroud; and four sisters, Mrs. W. W. Kendrick, of Cisco, Mrs. A. A. Vaughn, of Dalton, Mrs. W. H. Isenhour, of Dalton, and Mrs. Hoke Franklin, of Route 4, Dalton.

After The Chatsworth Times, in March 2012, printed a brief article stating that the museum still needed pictures of several Murray men who had died in World War II, Marjorie (Henderson) Tankersley contacted the museum to say that she knew a few things about Ellis Stroud. She said that was how he was known to everybody. She said that he had married someone named Hazel and that they had a daughter. Most importantly she said that a Murray man named Bob Kendrick was a nephew to the soldier.

Bob Kendrick confirmed that his mother, Mildred Stroud, was one of Ellis's four sisters. Mildred had married W. W. Kendrick of Cisco. Georgia had married W. H. Isenhower of Dalton. Corena married A. A. Vaughn of Dalton. Dorsey married Hoke Franklin, also from Dalton. Kendrick confirmed that Ellis had an older brother named Hoke, as shown in the 1930 Census.

Kendrick also said that Ellis had married Hazel Cogburn and that they had a daughter named Billie Stroud. He said that Ellis and Hazel had lived near his parents on Buttermilk Hill, near Franklin School, on Mitchell Bridge Road, when Ellis entered the Army.
