Ernest was born at White, SD. His family moved to a farm near South Shore, SD where he attended school through eighth grade. He loved trapping, playing guitar and building things out of wood including carving airplanes.

He entered the Air Force at Fort Snelling, MN on Nov 12, 1941, assigned as a mechanic to the 68th Bombardment Squadron, 44th Bombardment Group (H) in the European theater of operations. On Dec 28, 1944, he and his crew were lost in an aircraft accident over England.

He left behind his parents, siblings and a special friend, Ethel Even, whom he was engaged.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.

He was buried with full military honors at the U.S. Military Cemetery at Cambridge England.
